Fascia (connective tissue) is the tough fibrous web which holds all the bits and pieces of the body into a cohesive bundle. If we could dissolve every tissue in your body just leaving the fascia, we would be left with a detailed 3-dimensional structure of you down to your facial expression. Fascia can become stuck and adhere to tissue around it. Fascia can be the reason a pain in one part of the body can be caused by restrictions in a different part of the body. Think of a cotton t-shirt. If you make only the smallest pinch and twist in one area, the tension in the cotton fibres can pull in all different directions causing distortion in a completely different place. It is often the case of ‘where you think it is, it aint’ (Dr Ida Rolf).
